2. That comes to 92.13 measured in 100,000 units (9,213,099 / 100,000).
3. The difference in death rates per 100,000 is (478.0 – 403.1 = 74.9). That’s 74.9 extra deaths for every 100,000 in coal mining counties in Appalachia compared to the rest of the nation.
4. 74.9 x 92.13 = 6,901 extra heart and lung deaths every year compared to the nation. Yay for us!
5. Compared to non-mining Appalachia, the difference is 478.0-451.2 = 26.8 extra deaths in mining vs. non-mining Appalachian counties.
6. 26.8 x 92.13 = 2,469 extra heart and lung deaths every year compared to non-mining Appalachia. Way to go!
